I usually purchase mine through the hosting company of my choice but if not then I go to GoDaddy.om How about yourself?
GoDaddy only - a lot of people say they suck, but for me I have never had an issue and I have several hundred domains through them.
I don't know why, but I heard A LOT of bad news about GoDaddy.com. But TBH, I don't know any other sites to get your domain. What I do know is that it's always best to keep your domain name and your host together separated (big fail typo here). Why? Because when your host is letting you down, the switch to another host is easier.
I would have to say that is the worst advice ever..... I would never, ever recommend you have your domains names and hosting together for the sheer fact there are a lot of dishonest hosts out there and if you do decide to cancel you may never get your domain back - they have to sign off on your domain move from them to another registrar. Never put all yours eggs in one basket unless of course your basket has no value...
OH NO! I made a seriously BIG typo! xD I meant: NEVER keep your domain and host together, just as you said...
Yea I've actually had this with webhosts in the past paid for domains had poor hosting wanted to take the domains elsewhere but they stole the domains from me. I personally use namecheap.com to register all my domains but have from time to time like with mingle registered with fxdomains. I do however prefer namecheap as they always have offers on and you get a free WHOIS protection which saves me from spam. Always used them and will never look back I even plan to have mingle transferred to namecheap.
It's kinda on the same subject: but what do you guys advise to have? A .com; .org or anything else? Do people still know .com stands for commercial site?
I don't think people see it like this any more .com is commercial .org is not for profit I think people just see them for what they are .com being the most popular type of domain.
So for a selfmade blog about technology, .com is the way to go because people know this better? Or do you think it really doesn't matter at all...
I think .com is always the way to go when choosing a domain unless the domain isn't available go for a .net the next best thing of if you're a charity go for .org for national or .org.uk if from Great Britain.
That's what the like buttons for careful with the one word reply posts. Read our Rules especially the PostLooper's rules. Consider this an informal warning
Ow, ok, I'm sorry! But I just wanted to spread my gratitude haha. On topic: I checked out namecheap and it looks good. Lifehacker did an article about domain name registrars btw: Code: http://lifehacker.com/5683682/five-best-domain-name-registrars Namecheap was voted as the best registrar by the users over there.
Just had a look and I'm not sure about that TBH he has listed 1&1 who IMHO are one of the worst registrars updates that take seconds with namecheap and other registrars tend to take hours with 1&1 I wouldn't use them ever again tbh plus the bills they decided to send through my door. Namecheap is the best though honestly I don't think anyone would be disappointed with them.
oh god, I wouldnt touch 1&1 with a 500FT pole. I used them once for web hosting and domain registrar and it was a complete nightmare. The hosting sucked and when I tried to move it took me nearly 6 months for them to finely release my domains. Never again....worst company ever!
Currently I buy my domains through namecheap.com. They always have some sort of promotion and their pricing is off the chart. GoDaddy is also an amazing company and I almost bought from them but then I ran into a problem. I was looking to pay through PayPal but GoDaddy only accepts credit cards I think. Therefore, I was somewhat forced to buy a domain through namecheap but namecheap is still a great service! If you ever need to pay with PayPal then go with namecheap!
Oh sorry I guess I did not explain well enough haha. They accept paypal but you must have a credit card attached to your paypal account I think. That was probably the problem I had because I do not have a credit card, therefore, I cannot buy through GoDaddy. You can pay namecheap with just your PayPal balance and that is why I use them
I buy all of my domain names from Godaddy, I have been using them for years and never had a problem with them.
I've only ever used two domain name registration services. The first was Bravenet and they are a very reliable company, especially if you are also buying Bravenet web hosting. Also, I bought 2 domain names from Yahoo web hosting, back when they were in business. At the time, I only made the purchase cause the first domain name was available for less than a dollar for the first full year. It seemed like an unbeatable deal at the time. Though it became way more than a hassle when I found out they were going out of business some time later and I had to pay to transfer my domain names to another company. Next time, I need a domain name for one of my blogs, I will probably just buy it through Google, since it's already integrated into Blogger and they take care of redirection and all the tricky little details. If I were buying a domain name for a forum, I would go with Bravenet for reliability, since I can just as easily get my web space there too. And, they are very generous by allowing up to 200 sub-domain names with their hosting packages, i.e. subsite.yourdomain.com. That could be very convenient for someone who wants to redirect to infinite numbers of blogs or forums.
