Germany's coalition government has announced a reversal of policy that will see all the country's nuclear power plants phased out by 2022.
The decision makes Germany the biggest industrial power to announce plans to give up nuclear energy.
Environment Minister Norbert Rottgen made the announcement following late-night talks.
Chancellor Angela Merkel set up a panel to review nuclear power following the crisis at Fukushima in Japan.
There have been mass anti-nuclear protests across Germany in the wake of March's Fukushima crisis, triggered by an earthquake and tsunami.

it could be a good thing for them to do but what if the oil and coal run out that what they gonna go thats one of the best other energy source solar and wind power still have issues

I wish the United States would follow suit, Nuclear energy is dangerous. And its bad for the environment, our Nuclear power plants have stock piles of radioactive waste and no where to put it. Sooner or latter something bad is going to happen to one of the United States Nuclear reactors. You can't ride the lightning forever and not get burnt!

I think that's an extremely positive move to make in all honesty.

In reality there is no need for nuclear power any more and we need to be thinking about the future of our children's, children's, children and when we have all the answers at our feet there's no reason we shouldn't use them. We have solar energy, wind energy, wave energy all kinds of renewable energy that does the job so there shouldn't be any reason now why we're not all using these methods it's better for everyone all around.

A positive decision by Germany there I only hope that other countries will follow in there steps.

This decision of Germany is in response to a growing clamor not to depend on nuclear energy anymore as a major source of power. However, a great crisis in the Middle East affecting a steady supply of much-needed oil can easily reverse this policy -- 2022 is still too far away and I am sure there will be big events that will transpire in the next 10 years. But this decision is really good -- for the environment and the people.

Trust me, the nuclear energy is one of the cheapest and cleanest form of energy available to us. All other forms of energy are either expensive or is extremely polluting. I think there is some propaganda warfare going on against the nuclear energy, funded by the oil sheikhs of Saudi.

There's a nuclear plant in New Mexico that is now surrounded by a wildfire. It will be interesting to see how that turns out. I think its great that Germany is taking the lead to end nuclear power. Its dangerous, and should only be used to power inter-galactic spaceships.

You could be correct. According to some sources, there is now an available technology to make nuclear power safe and if ever something bad will happen to make the whole system containable. What happened in Japan is that the place is a wrong location to build a plant like that. But then again, the problem is that no matter how careful we are in planning we are still subjected to some flaws here and there.

The fact that nuclear power remains to be cheap is the reason why Japan is not officially giving up nuclear power for now. As a country with limited resources, they need it for economic activities.

Thermal power plants produce a lot of unwanted emissions. Hydropower plants cause large scale destruction of forest and ecological equilibrium. Solar energy is very much green, but it is prohibitively expensive. So I reach the conclusion that nuclear power is the best for our environment.
