Today, Mahatma Gandhi is viewed as the greatest icon for non-violence in the world. But sadly, despite all the great work and his non-violence philosophy he was never awarded the Nobel peace prize. Was the horizon of the Norwegian Nobel Committee too narrow? Were the committee members unable to appreciate the struggle for freedom among non-European peoples? Or were the Norwegian committee members perhaps afraid to make a prize award which might be detrimental to the relationship between their own country and Great Britain? Geir Lundestad, Secretary of Norwegian Nobel Committee in 2006 said, "The greatest omission in our 106 year history is undoubtedly that Mahatma Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace prize. Gandhi could do without the Nobel Peace prize, whether Nobel committee can do without Gandhi is the question" What are your thoughts on this matter ?
Well, at least the Nobel committee accepted the fact that they have made a tremendous error. But they did not award him posthumously also. At that time the British Empire still had some power and I think the Norwegians did not want to step on their toes.
