If you had no money, would you stop paying rent or stop buying groceries?

Let's say for a minute that you lost your job and didn't have enough money to pay rent AND buy groceries. What would you do?

Which expense would you cover first?

Without a house to stay in, you'd have to live outdoors. So paying rent or mortgage on your home/apartment is essential. Then again, you could live inside and still be starving, so you have to eat or you're likely to perish quickly.

What would you do in a situation like that?

I guess it depends, if you have a family that lives with you, the house comes first and the groceries would have to come second. When you really think about it, you can go to a soup kitchen and still live in a decent house, but it would be kind of hard to struggle to keep your spot in a homeless shelter and eat well. I guess it also depends on other factors, how lenient the landlord/bank would be, how much food you already have, etc.

I would pay rent and go down to the supermarket and buy a case of Roman Noodles. I am pretty sure that 100 come in a case and a case is $20. You could live off that for a long time. ;)

I chose to buy food. I stopped paying all my loans except for my car payment, which is now paid off. I lost my house, but, I now work for myself and make enough to pay the rent. I don't think I'll own property again, honestly its a hassle.

I guess, I will buy food first not necessarily to buy everything on the list. Good enough to feed my family and we will not be on hunger strike. You can more ways in finding the payment if you are not hungry because you have sound mind if your stomach is full. If the owner of the house you are rented has a heart I guess, they will understand and will give you an extension, unless they are hard person and only wanted the money from your rent.

I pray I'm never in a situation where I'd have to choose which I'd have to do without like that. But how can you even decide that? Both are necessities.

You know this is a very rare case, but even if it happens there are many solutions like asking help from family or friends.
I think that the social security in the state of California, provides a special card for people who have a very low income or don't work which they can use to buy food from any store. I heard that they also pay rent for people who don't have a job, so it's not a big for people who live in the state of California.

I would stop paying the rent, as there are many places you can get help for housing so that wont kill you, but to stop eating just wouldnt be a thing that you could live with,

My husband and I are broke, busted, and disgusted...so we are kinda in that position right now. We have gone without paying bills in order to get food before, thankfully we do not have a mortgage or rent, we kind of own our home for the time being, but it may be foreclosed on before too long..ugh. But anyway, I would choose to camp out and eat..lol :)

One of the great things about being a US citizen and living the the good ole USA is that there are resources available for people who are struggling. I've been an advocate for disabled veterans and if people are receptive that can have food and shelter...because both of those things...are necessities. In the state of Utah people can dial a phone number which is a resource hotline if they are desperate. People can also apply for state assistance for food and there are Care and Share food pantries that offer free food to low income individuals. There are also homeless shelters and subsidized housing options for people with no or low income. One of the things I love about being a citizen of the United States of American is that people take care of each other. ;)
