Any fans for Russian movies here?

During the Soviet period, a large number of movies were made in Russian, but most of them were for propaganda purposes. Only after the breakup of the USSR in 2002, good movies began to be produced in Russian

A real turning point was the movie Brat (1997) staring Sergei Bodrov. It was shown in the 1997 Cannes film festival. The film tells the story of the mafia underworld in St. Peterburg, the second largest Russian city.

Another great movie was Voyna (2002, War in English) staring Alexei Chadov and Ian Kelly. The film was set in the background of the second Chechen war and was critically acclaimed for its plot and action. Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė and the ethnic Greek actor Evklid Kyurdzidis also acted in the film.

I watch 9th company on Hulu. It was about the a unit in the Soviet army who are sent to Afghanistan. It was sub-titled so I could understand what they were saying.

You can watch it here: http://www.hulu.com/watch/248326/9th-company

It was a good movie. I watched it last year. I would regard it as the best movie ever by Fyodor Bondarchuk. Perhaps his most famous movie was The Inhabited Island, but I didn't liked it that much.

A number of my relatives fought in Afghanistan, and none of them enjoyed the hospitality there. Afghanistan became the graveyard for 15,000 young Soviet soldiers (most of them were drafted when they were 17 or 18).
