Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?

You mentioned it in the title, so that your concentration is on driving, not the radio.

You've just confirmed that noise is a distraction. I should perhaps say "sound" rather than noise, because many will object to their favorite music playing on the radio labelled as noise.

But it is true that sound, especially loud sound (let's just call it noise for convenience) does distract you. When you're trying to drive and look for an address, your mind has to divide its attention between the two tsks. If you bring noise into the equation, you're putting extra burden on the mind.

It's the same thing when you're trying to think. You'll usually turn down the music so you can concentrate better.

I also 'mute' my TV when I'm trying to focus on something I need to read. It seems chaotic to me to have sound, noise or whatever you want to call it when I'm ready to concentrate on something. Maybe that says something about my ability to multi-task but we all have different abilities....right?

I'm guilty of doing the same thing. It's almost as if I'm focusing so much and can't afford to have my attention on anything else. Plus I get distracted very easily sometimes. :)
