In America they have something similar called a homestead, which might be similar to an allotment. In places like Florida, homesteads get a special tax exemption. Many people still homestead in Iowa and 'The Heartland' of America, cause of the rich fertile soil that is good for growing. A very good friend of mine from online has her own homestead in Iowa and has maybe two acres of garden and she grows her own grapes, corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, cabbage, corn, beans and watermelons. She's a very industrious woman. One of the hardest workers I've ever met. Wish I had such a talent for growing food. It would be such a big money saver for my family.
