Who would have thought that today access to internet would be enshrined as one of the basic human rights all humans must enjoy. Before the advent of the internet, this would have been hard to think over with. This is now an ultimate recognition of the power of the internet that shaped the way we communicate and link with each other.

"A United Nations report said Friday that disconnecting people from the internet is a human rights violation and against international law. The report railed against France and the United Kingdom, which have passed laws to remove accused copyright scofflaws from the internet. It also protested blocking internet access to quell political unrest."

That's awesome! I mean really phenomenal. Authoritarian governments can no longer repress the flow of information to their people.

Just recently I heard that Iran is planning to create their own Iranian intranet that is available within Iran and acts like the Internet but would not connect to the real Internet in any way, so we'll see what the UN's take on that will be. It would be like an office computer network or database share within the country where you could connect to that database and it would only contain approved sites/information. Sort of like how the US government set up their own internet back in the 1960s, compartmentalizing each database and only allowing shared access between authorized governmental departments. Of course, at the time, this was seen as a homeland security issue (before they coined the phrase. Later on, universities were allowed to access that pre-version of the Internet and then in the early nineties then Pres. Bill Clinton deregulated the whole process to make it available to the public.

Ironically, the one thing the US government did to keep us all apart is actually bringing us all together.

    And, thankfully so. :)

Well I suppose that's good to hear. I'm not sure that it will really help anything, but it's good of them to try...

This is quite an awesome improvement. I can't believe it's gotten to this point, but it's definitely improving the world in my opinion.
I wonder if this applies to parents and their kids, because many of them take it away as consequences.

This will be tough to enforce, especially against governments like Iran and China.

Neither Iran nor China will be bullied. Neither country feels as if they should have to modernize political or social views just to suit Western tastes.

Iran was formerly known as Persia which some people might remember from Biblical stories in ancient times. Truly, they are one of the most ancient countries in existence today.

Surely, a society that old would be able to make up their own minds about things. If the citizens of Iran are unhappy with their government or unfair treatment, then THEY need to stand up and rebel like in Egypt. These things can be done. They cannot just sit idly by for hundreds of years being rule by one authoritarian leader after the next that limits their freedoms. If the people of Iran are not speaking, then it means they must agree with such brutish treatment. :(

That's good news. Especially since governments have been trying to find ways to control the internet and what we do with it as individuals.

Wow. I've never really thought of it like that. All this time, I've only thought of internet access as a perk and not a real necessity governed by laws. It's nice to know about these recent changes though. :)

I would, however, hope that the use of the Internet is a right that would be taken away if abused. I would hope so especially in a terrorist situation.
