When I was a kid, we only ever used our car to drive from home to destination. We never used the airplane, maybe cause it was too expensive. And, the trips were always a lot of fun. We made numerous long distance car trips every year between the states visiting relatives along the way. Sometimes, we would travel up to 200 miles or more, one way, stay a few days and then come back home. My brothers and I played portable video games in the backseat. Back then, (early eighties), portable games like Donkey Kong and Frogger were very popular and made the road trips go fast. Do you ever take car trips or just take the airplane when going on vacation?
When I travel from city to city in Texas, I take the car. Whenever I go out of state, I take an airplane. However, this summer in June, I will be draving from Houston, Texas to the Ozarks in Arkansas. Yeah...It is a VERY long drive!
Wow! That's a heck of a long drive! Good for you. A nice long drive helps clear the thoughts. We were always driving from one state to another for vacation and it felt like it was going to take forever. Though the trips were always fun. At one point, my mom joined a church about 120 miles down the road from where we lived. Guess what? We drove 120 miles there and back EVERY Sunday and some Wednesdays. That was not an easy trip, especially on school nights. Most times, the summers were unbearable in the car cause we didn't have air conditioning. Sometimes, we got to stay over in an air-conditioned hotel room. Thankfully, it didn't cost too much money. For the most part, I just remember being too hot in the car on those trips. They were not a lot of fun. The "trips to grandma's house at Christmas" were much more relaxed and fun. Good luck on your trip. What do you plan to do for entertainment? Are you bringing some favorite music or books on tape?
I can only imagine how beautiful that must be. When I was traveling in Tennessee on vacation some time back, it was always so much fun to watch the mountains in the distance. A truly beautiful sight. One of my other favorite places to travel is Florida and not cause of the beaches. As you enter Florida, especially around the Panhandle there are many tree lined back roads. If you're traveling at night, with only headlights on a moonless night, it looks like the trees are reaching out into the road to give you a big hug. It can be spooky for a young child. But, as an adult, I found it to be very comforting.
I love going on what I call "road trips"! I live in Illinois and we usually drive semi-short distances for vacations. It's been quite a while since we have been able to afford a vacation though. My favorite road trip was when my husband and I rode with his Aunt to get her grandsons car in Atlanta, GA. We left that night and it was late in the summer. Going through the mountains with the windows down is the most fantastic feeling! The cool air and the smell is so relaxing! I'd love to go somewhere this summer, but unless our financial status changes for the better, it looks like we won't be able to sadly.
I've been to Kennesaw Mountain in the past. And, it's really amazing. So many people talk about the other natural attractions around Atlanta, but that was one of my favorite places to go. To me, nothing else compares. I have some very vivid family memories from that time. It's been awhile since I've been back to Atlanta, at least a decade. I'm sure everything's changed by now.
You are right. It is much more expensive to travel with airplane. Whats worse, i really feel very uncomfortable to be in a plane, always feel like throwing up I like traveling by car and me as the driver!
Car trips are lots of fun, cause you get a chance to talk with everyone in the car. Though gas prices are high these days. Still, even if it cost $100 for gas to take a car trip vacation, that would be much less than the average $500 airline ticket per person. Amazingly, buying gas is still the cheaper option than airplanes.
Indeed! It is too expensive to travel by airplane. I dont like it not because it is expensive but because i feel more sick on the plane than that in the car. Still, for some far away destination you have no choice but to take the plane.
It might be quite expensive for us to travel by car too, depending on how far the place you want to go is, and the type of car you own. Toll fees now are very very expensive, the further you travel, the more toll fee you have to choose. If the journey is very very long, you might have to keep pumping feul Ito your car. Diesel and fuel now is very expensive too. So if you go alone to vacations, sit on a plane. If you are going with the whole family, you can take a car.
Hadn't thought about toll fees and other related expenses. There's also hotel stays, which cost money, especially if you are traveling with the entire family. Though most US hotels let the kids stay free in the same room as the parent. So that's a big money saver. Though when we were traveling, we drove straight through the night, with one parent driving and switching off with the other so they could get a nap while we kept on going. It helps to have two drivers in the car, saves on hotels.
My wife is afraid to fly, so the only vacations we go on are by car. The longest vacation we have been on is from Michigan to Orlando Florida. We have been to Disney World 4 times now.
Wow! I lived in Florida for seven years and didn't go once. A little too much money out of my budget. But, the beaches were lovely and free and near by; well twenty miles away. But, still close enough by car.
I will take car, plane, or even bus to where I want to go. Depends on my mood or the distance I guess. If I am going half way across the country I am not going to do so by car, I would probably use a plane, if I am going <300 miles, I will use the car, and if I am bored and want something different I will take a Grey Hound lol.
Actually, the last two times I moved cross country, I did so by car. We packed our stuff in the car and drove nearly 1000 miles from Florida to upstate New York for a job assignment. Though the job didn't last more than six months, the trip up and back was the time of my life. And, I wouldn't have traded that for anything. A couple years later, we made the same trip except up to Pennsylvania for a job assignment. Such a lovely place. But, you wouldn't imagine three foot snow drifts. Pennsylvania had the worst snow storm in a century just a month after we arrived. The roads were nearly impassable, so no going to the store for food. Thankfully, the local pizza place guy had snow tires on his car and was able to come out to deliver a pizza. He got a BIG tip!
I love to have a road trip! I just went for one up north to Malaysia for an overnight stay. More often how enjoyable the vacation is depends on the company you have. If you have great company you would enjoy a lousy trip but with lousy company you would not enjoy the best of the journey.
I like that. It's true, too. If you have a good road mate, then the journey never seems long or boring. The conversation is always good when you have known the other person for awhile. And, long car trips are best for getting to know someone better, too. You never really know a person until you've traveled with them for three days in the car, no heater, in twenty degree weather. I've been there.
You are right, going on the road is a good way to get to know a person better. During the hours inside the car, you would be able to talk about a lot of things. You can spend a lot of time together and it would be good for bonding.
